It uses machine learning and algorithms to recognise patterns and generate text, images, or other outputs that resemble human creativity and thinking.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThere\u2019s an increasing belief that informed and responsible use of GenAI can increase efficiency, improve decision-making and encourage innovation. However, we recognise it also comes with potential risks, including data protection breaches, copyright issues, disclosure of confidential information, ethical considerations, and compliance with legal obligations.\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Scout Association doesn\u2019t endorse the use of any specific tools. However, we\u2019ve provided principles to help local Scout Groups if they do make the decision to use GenAI at a local level and take on the associated risks. The responsibility for making these decisions sits with Local Trustee Boards. The principles are:\u003C/p\u003E\n\u003Cul\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPersonal, sensitive, and confidential data:\u003C/strong\u003E Never enter confidential, sensitive, or personal data into GenAI applications, as they may store and learn from the content.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIntellectual property rights and licensing:\u003C/strong\u003E Avoid using images, logos, crafted copy or other intellectual property owned by The Scout Association or third parties in GenAI applications. This may infringe on the terms of use.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDiscriminatory language:\u003C/strong\u003E Never input offensive, discriminatory, defamatory or other inappropriate content as prompts. Always make sure that all inputs align with \u003Ca href=\u0022/volunteers/running-your-section/programme-guidance/information-for-volunteers/the-scout-promise/the-scout-law-and-values/\u0022 title=\u0022The Scout Law and Values\u0022\u003EScouts Values\u003C/a\u003E.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESecurity:\u003C/strong\u003E Apply the same security measures to GenAI applications as you do to all IT applications and comply with your local IT security policies.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EReview outputs:\u003C/strong\u003E GenAI can produce inaccurate outputs or \u2018hallucinations\u2019. Always fact-check and review outputs to make sure they are appropriate, accurate and unbiased.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEthical and responsible use:\u003C/strong\u003E Use GenAI applications ethically and responsibly and in accordance with Scouts Values. Never generate content to impersonate, bully or harass others, or to create explicit or offensive content.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThird-party add-ons:\u003C/strong\u003E Be cautious of third-party services built on top of GenAI applications. Avoid inputting information into these add-ons.\u003C/li\u003E\n\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETransparency:\u003C/strong\u003E Be honest about your use of GenAI, especially when producing content for Scouts. Inform your colleagues when you\u2019ve used GenAI.
